SERIOUS FLOWERS
JuNE 27 to July 18 2024
TEICHERT GALLERY - HALIFAX, CANADA
“You know, pretty girls, flowers, you can’t be serious."
- Alex Katz
Alison's new collection of hooked floral "yarn paintings" was featured at the Teichert Gallery in Halifax in July 2024. It was the gallery's first time showcasing the work of a fiber artist.
Here is what Discover Halifax had to say about the show:
Visit the Teichert Gallery to take in Alison Mitchell's Serious Flowers. Vibrant tones shine through Mitchell's graphic style and draw the viewer into a blossoming collection of hooked art pieces.
Serious Flowers challenges the idea that botanical artwork must be simplistic in concept. Inspired by the rich tradition of rug hooking in Nova Scotia, vibrant thrift store vases, and a flourishing South Shore garden, Mitchell hand dyes Atlantic Canadian yarn from Canada's oldest woolen mill to vibrant colours. Mitchell pulls away from her typical figurative style, compelled to find joy and positivity amid the flowers, despite recent conflicts and tragedies that impact our daily lives.
